Artist Shepard Fairey said on Friday that he was wrong about which photo he used and the he tried to hide his error. Fairey apologized for using wrong judgment and attempting to hide his mistake, he also said he takes full responsibility for his actions.
For those of you who are unaware of this situation, Fairey painted a picture of Barack Obama based on a portrait where Obama’s head was tilted to side and looking upward. This painting gained widespread attention during the campaign elections. Unfortunately, Fairey lied about which photograph he based it on and did not obtain permission to use it, which was necessary.
It was stated in AP reports that Fairey even went as far as destroying documents that would reveal the actual photo he based his painting on.
Fairey struck back at AP with a lawsuit citing “fair-use exceptions to copyright law,” which in turn then prompted AP to file a countersuit claiming “misappropiation.”
