Baking cupcakes for a special occasion or holiday can be a great way to express your cooking creativity. Halloween is coming up and you can easily make jack-o-lanterns, spider webs and even eyeball looking cupcakes. A few things such as food coloring, icing tubes and candies can turn an iced cupcake into a festive treat.

First, you will need to bake your favorite boxed cupcake mix. (Pillsbury, Betty Crocker or Duncan Hines) Chocolate, Vanilla or even Funfetti flavors will work fine. Make sure you let your cupcakes cool off before you start icing and decorating them. You don’t want  to end up with runny icing because your cupcake was still warm.

Spider Web Cupcake:

Things you will need:

  • Vanilla Icing (Pillsbury Easy Frost, Whipped Supreme frosting, etc.)
  • Black- decorating gel icing (Betty Crocker Easy Flow Icing, decorating gels etc.)
  • Knife/Cake Spatial
  • Toothpickhttps://i0.wp.com/www.easycupcakes.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/spiderweb.jpg
  • Optional-plastic spider

First, ice your cupcakes with the vanilla frosting. Make sure you do a nice smooth even coat on each cupcake. Next, you will want to take the black decorating gel and draw two circles on the cupcake. A small circle near the center of the cupcake and a larger circle near the edge of the cupcake. Then to create the web look you will need to use the toothpick. Starting from the center of the cupcake drag the toothpick to the edge. Continue pulling and dragging the icing with the toothpick till you have a spider web that you like. Finish the treat with tiny creepy crawly plastic spider in the center of your spider web. (You can use any color gel tubes to make colorful spider webs.)

Eyeball Cupcake:

Things you will need:

  • Vanilla Frosting
  • Red and Black Icing Tube
  • Life Savers Gummies or Hard candy
  • Knife/cake spatula

Ice your cupcakes with the vanilla frosting using a knife or cake spatula. Next, take the Life Saver and place it in the middle of the cupcake. You will then add a small amount of black icing to the center of the Life Saver. This will be the pupil for your eye. Finally take the red icing tube and make squiggly lines on the cupcake. These will be the veins of the blood-shot eye. Use all different colored Life Savers’ to make spooky eyeballs!

Here is a short video from Youtube that can help you with making your on piping bags. It also includes some helpful tips on how to use a piping bag to create straight lines and other decorating styles with frosting. Let your imagination and creative side run wild when decorating cupcakes!
