Languages

Today I had a cinema class and we talked about film genres. Of course there are a lot of different genres like western, comedy, melodram, thriller, horror, crime, war, animation, scifi etc. and they can even be mixed with each other. Only one genre surprised me: foreign film.

Does this mean that all of the films of the other genres have to be american? How can you call all of the movies that aren’t produced in America only “foreign”? Don’t they also belong to one of the other genres that I mentioned? And do you always know where those foreign films come from when they are synchronised in English?

Here is a quote from “Inglourious Basterds” the film I wrote about last week:

Bridget von Hammersmark: “I know this is a silly question before I ask it, but can you Americans speak any other language than English?”
