John Harvard’s Brew House

John Harvard’s Brew House is a short drive from the Stony Brook Campus, a restaurant that offers tasty food for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, I can’t comment on  how the beer tastes since I’m not 21. However, they do brew their own beers on the premises and have all different types to satisfy all pallets.

Don’t let the words brew house worry you. Diners can choose from two separate eating areas. You can either choose to sit in the restaurant section or the bar area, which creates a relaxed and comfortable setting for everyone.

The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable and the service is good. The decor of the restaurant has an old world feel. The restaurant also showcases in a large glass room all the distilleries and equipment used to make their beer.

I went this past Friday night with my boyfriend and two friends and the bar section was crowded, however, seating for the restaurant area was only about a five minute wait. I would consider the food to be classic and very simple. Food ranges from burgers, sandwiches, salads, and finger foods such as buffalo tenders, quesadillas, and spinach and artichoke dip. Their menu also features specials and seasonal beers.

The avocado club is a tasty sandwich that comes with a heaping pile of fries. In a previous visit, I ordered the chicken pot pie. It’s not your typical tiny microwaveable pot pie that you get in the frozen food section. It has huge chunks of chicken and vegetables and is covered with flaky pastry dough on top. It’s a great choice!

So the next time you and your friends are stumped on where to eat for dinner check out John Harvard’s Brew House. It’s a 5 minute drive from campus, has great food, a relaxed and comfortable environment and most importantly does not put a hole in your pocket.
