MTA Trying Planning More Cuts

I recently just read an article on the New York Times online site that really caught my eye. It said that the MTA is revealing plans tomorrow to cut two subway lines and to make students pay full fare for rides. There is also talk about trains running less frequently. I found this story particularly alarming because private and public school children across New York City have been provided transportation by the MTA for years and this certainly does not seem to be a great time for them to make such an announcement. We are still currently in an economic recession, people in New York City have actually tried to cut back by taking the subway more frequently and for them and their children to be disserviced if this plan actually does come into fruition does not seem to be a move toward progress. The MTA had already increased fares earlier this year for subways. busses and the LIRR. The new proposals are being made as a response to the $400 million shortfall the MTA is facing.

The Princess and The Frog

The Disney animated movie, The Princess and the Frog, debuted at No.1 in the box office. The movie had gained lots of talk and even some controversy. It was the first Disney movie to feature an African-American princess. The movie opened in thearters this weekend Friday December 11th and was well received.

The movies cast includes Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Keith David, Oprah Winfrey and Terrence Howard.

Knight Center to Close

The Knight Center for Specialized Journalism will close at the end of the month.

“The rapid changes in news media technology and economics require new thinking. This move will enable us to focus fully on designing new approached to the challenges of the 21^st-century journalism,” stated Dean Kevin Klose of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland.

The Knight Center has provided “seminars and specialized educational fellowship to more than 2,700 journalists from more than 500 news organizations,” stated in the article Knight Center Closing Dec. 31 by The Philip Merrill College of Journalism.

“We are in active discussion with the Knight Foundation about future collaborations to provide essential, forward-looking and dynamic multimedia specialized journalism education,” Klose said. “We thank the Knight Foundation for its years of enduring support and intense interest in the work of the Knight Center,” Klose said.

Holiday Shopping in Columbus Square

Holiday shopping usually means trips to major retail stores, long store lines and a general scramble to buy items at the last minute, or recently a much more popular trend is going online and shopping which ultimatley is much more conveinent and less stressful. But there is another alternative to buying holiday gifts that people may find much more relaxing and enjoyable- shopping at Urban Space Markets- like the one in Columbus Square. Shopping at the markets allows you to shop in a much less hostile environment. It allows you to engage with others in the community.

Another nice perk about shopping at the market is that there are lots of unique and hand made crafts and items that you would not be able to buy anywhere else that are made by local artisans.

The Antlers are coming to NYC

The Antlers are a Brooklyn based band fronted by Peter Silberman. Their debut album, “Hospice,” is the result of front man Silberman’s “self described year and a half exile upon moving to New York City,” according to “Under the Radar” magazine.

The album is an extended creative writing project of sorts. Silberman used his introversion to identify with the characters in his ballads. “Hospice” centers around a man watching his girlfriend slowly die of bone cancer.

After a relationship “destroyed him,” according to UTR, Silberman “translated the experience into vivid descriptions of death, memory and regret.” These themes are prevalent and almost overwhelming throughout “Hospice.” Silberman maintains that it was not his intention to make a “depressing album,” although songs include “Kettering” and “Wake.” The band has been receiving positive reviews on both the album and their live shows.

The Antlers will be performing at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan on Dec. 15, 2009.

Budget Cuts Bring Class Cuts

It’s that time of year again, when students begin registering for next semester’s classes. However, students at Stony Brook University are becoming increasingly angered with the spring semester’s course offerings, or lack thereof.

Since Governor Patterson announced the SUNY-wide budget cuts, students have been encountering schedules devoid of classes needed to graduate with their majors. Both the POL and EST departments have urged their students to take needed classes over the winter or summer sessions, when less students are taking class. But as many students have pointed out, taking classes at these times is both costly and inconvenient.

“They charge extra,” said a business major, who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s irrational to think people can afford those extra charges and get here in the summer.”

Students who’ve sought out help, according to this source, have been told that the lack of classes is something departments can’t do anything about. The departments’ solutions involving both POL and EST have been highly advocating spending the breaks at the University.

With New York State constituents angry, as budget cuts threaten public elementary, middle and high schools as well, it is a hope that senators will fight harder for all public school funding and that Governor Patterson will finally see that education is not a place to cut corners.

Predictions of Job Growth by Spring

When the recession hit in December 2007, 7.5 millions Americans were unemployed and the jobless rate stood at 4.9 percent, states Joseph Berge in the NY Times article Summers Predicts Job Growth by Spring.

Lawrence H. Summers, President Obama’s top economic advisor, stated that he believes that the unemployment rate will be at its lowest by the spring.

Mr. Summers said that “everyone aggress the recession is over.”

It is noted in the article that the President plans to spend $50 billion on “repairing the nation’s infrastructure.”

This article is a positive note not just upcoming graduates, as myself, but for the country in general.

Mariah Carey New Years Eve Concert at MSG

Mariah Carey will launch her “Angels Advocate” tour on December 31st, New Years Eve. This will be Mariah’s first tour in three years. Carey announced that she would be scheduling a tour last month via twitter. She will be performing songs from her recent album “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel”. Other musical guests are also scheduled to perform including R&B sensation Trey Songz and RydazNrtist, a new musical group signed to her husband Nick Cannon’s record label, who are said to be the opening act.

The New Years Eve concert will be the first show of her 19-city “Angels Advocate” tour. The last show is scheduled for February 27 in Las Vegas, NV Pearl Concert Theater. Tickets are currently on sale at: Ticketmaster.com. For more news about the tour visit: mariahcarey.com, her official website.

Spanish Cinema Now

The Film Society of Lincoln Center is offering a film series on contemporary Spanish cinema. The series will run now through December 20th. Some of the films that will be shown are; Cell 211 / Celda 211, Bloody May, aka The Second of May / Sangre de mayo, The Dancer and the Thief / El baile de la victoria and Gordo.

This is an interesting look at international film for cinefiles everywhere. If you are interested in finding more information about these screenings or ticket prices The Film Society of Lincoln Center will contain more information.
